Since 1989 when the State of Washington awarded Terrace a "Schools for the 21st Century" Grant, our staff has worked to continually develop a program to prepare students to be successful in the 21st century. This spring, Terrace was awarded the Gates Foundation Grant to develop Smaller Learning Communities. The research around the effectiveness of smaller learning communities on student learning and attitudes abut school is clear and compelling. The needs of our students demand that we take extraordinary measures to reduce student failure, to reduce student dropouts, to reduce student apathy and, in turn, provide a challenging and engaging curriculum so the EVERY student might be successful.

Mountlake Terrace High School, servicing 1800+ students, provides all students with a wide variety of academic and technical course offering's that will help prepare them for post high school education and the world of work. Our technology program provides students outstanding opportunities in courses like computer-aided drafting, computer animation, robotic vehicles, computer construction, CISCO Networking and many more. Our aim, through these opportunities, and the work of the staff here at Terrace, is to have all students achieve our motto: "To Be, Not to Seem."

Engineering Technology Program
Students interested in careers in the engineering field find a variety of engineering technology classes at Mountlake Terrace High School. Early in the program there are trimester long classes that introduce students to basic skills of technical and engineering careers, including problem solving, the engineering design process, and teamwork. Students with interest and ability can enter into yearlong classes in the engineering program to further develop more in-depth skills and knowledge.

Classes are offered in the areas of beginning and advanced computer drafting, architectural drafting, engineering graphics, power/energy/transportation, manufacturing, robotics, and animation. Advanced students have been involved extracurricular technical projects as well. MTHS students have participated in regional and state competitions in engineering design, computer aided design, and robotics and have won several awards.

The Technology Education staff at MTHS includes Skip Carlson, Craig DeVine, Ray Johnson, Scott Lindley, Joe Mismas and Sue Wolfe. Together, these individuals bring strong backgrounds in Technology Education, and substantial industrial experience in manufacturing and engineering. The staff and curriculum at MTHS give students a well-rounded and relevant foundation for a 2 or 4 year education in the field of engineering and engineering technology.

Manufacturing Program
Vocational education in manufacturing consists of a variety of classes at Mountlake Terrace High School. There are a number of trimester-long classes that study a range of manufacturing topics. These classes consistently focus learning objectives in engineering problem solving, shop safety and teamwork, which are the basic skills of technical and manufacturing careers. Classes are offered in the areas of computer drafting, power/energy/transportation, engineering graphics, manufacturing and robotics.

Advanced students with proven interest and skill can also enter the yearlong course in Advanced Manufacturing. This advanced curriculum is built around the 10 Competencies for manufacturing workers as defined by labor and industry leaders participating in the Boeing MTAG program. The course gives students the opportunity to study manufacturing topics, then design and produce projects using wood, metal and plastics and a variety of shop equipment. Graduates are eligible for selection into summer internships with the Boeing Company, and in the last 5 years, over 60 MTHS students have been selected for these internships.
