We hear the word “strategic” a lot. It has become a buzz word, but what does it mean? What are the behaviors or activities that are associated with strategic leadership? Just because you have a strategic plan doesn’t mean you are being strategic. Traditionally, leaders think if they accomplish the goals and objectives on the strategic plan; they are being strategic.
Strategic leadership is more than just checking off tasks. It’s the ability to anticipate, envision, maintain flexibility, and work with others to initiate and manage change that furthers an organization’s vision and mission. It must involve all levels of the organization.
For those charged with leading the strategic plan, identifying and developing strategic leaders, and for the mission-driven non-profits, it is vitally important to connect your activities and strategies to improve and grow the organization as well as effectively communicate who you are. Understanding the key factors that are involved in strategic leadership will allow a more thoughtful, planned, and timed implementation work plan for any new or change initiatives.

- Understand activities and behaviors that define strategic leadership
- Identify actions and behaviors related to strategic leadership on two axioms: 1) Productivity – managing tasks, outcome, goals, results; 2) Positivity – establishing, building, maintaining, and growing relationships, trust, loyalty and engagement.
- Identify, understand and practice meta skills needed to be a strategic leader (i.e. Beers Model, understanding organization’s key issues and patterns; communication and feedback skills; managing performance; fostering a climate of engagement, positive moral and accountability)
